GPOYW - The Pride Of Northeast Minneapolis Edition
I don’t do the whole GPOYW thing very often, so let me break down some of the finer points in this picture.
1) This picture was taken in 19somethingsomething in front of our house on 22nd & Grand St NE.
2) The garage you see behind our house was built just a few years before this picture was taken. We weren’t so flush with cash that we had garages built whenever we felt like it, but someone went through the neighborhood one night and burned down like seven garages…ours was one of them.
3) I am pictured with my first ever car, a 1974 Mercury Montego which I bought from a little old lady in St. Anthony.
4) The car had an actual working 8-track player in it when I bought it.
5) 8-track wasn’t going to cut it, so I had to go to Radio Shack and buy an adapter so I could listen to my music on cassette tapes.
6) I eventually ditched the 8-track/cassette thing and went to Audio King and had a stereo system installed that cost more than what I payed for the car.
7) Satin college jackets with the matching hats were all the rage back in the day. Seriously, they were, trust me on this.
8) I am wearing sweatpants in this picture, but I may have been going to or coming back from the gym. Or it is possible I felt sweatpants capped off the whole satin jacket-matching hat ensemble.
9) This picture was taken a few years before Northeast got all hip and cool, and the family in the house next to us was typical of some other families in the area. Think…..motorcycles, pit bulls, beer, and cops.
10) Did the ladies dig a guy who wore sweatpants with satin jackets and drove a 1974 car with a working 8-track player? I gotta be real honest with you and say it was pretty hit or miss.
Well, there you have it. And just so you know, I eventually stopped wearing satin jackets, bought a collared shirt, and grew up to be the type of guy who would give presentations at Give & Take events.
Stay in school kids.
